The incredulous warrior

Hat's off to Charlie

I was recently commissioned to create a reinterpretation of C.M. Russell's "The Fireboat". Russell's late work tends to be relatively High-Key in color, and I decided to use the opportunity to explore intense color. I added several secondary colors to my palette, and set off to depict the crisp light of the western plains at Sunset.

I was inspired by the Mojave creation story of Mastamho, a diety who transforms himself into a bird. In lieu of the "Fireboat" in Russell's original, I envisioned a glider, fashioned from hides, bone, wood, and sinew, on its first suspenseful and miraculous flight.

The Travelogue Continues

Check out the Travelogue section for the next riveting installment of feats of painterly daring-do! In this installment, I travel through the Rocky Mountains, in search of an unfettered soul and dry firewood.

The Travelogue documents the five-months I spent driving around the U.S. painting landscapes in 2003. I'll be posting new entries as often as possible, check back often.

Summer in Plein Air

After a year spent cooped up in the studio, it's good to get out in the glorious chaos. This summer I had the opportunity to visit Nagshead, NC, during the annual McPhillips Family vacation. Not one for sunbathing, I brought my thumb-box. I was also invited to take part in the Annual "Painting the Park's" Festival in Estes Park, CO. View the Sketches here.

You may also peruse some quick sketches I produced here in Boulder.
